Petit Book Animé du Bucharest
Coulloudon, a Lyon based soon-to-be-great motion designer, chose to spend a six month internship at VÂNĂ to learn animation, motion graphics and storytelling from us.
Six months is plenty of time to fall in and out of love with Bucharest, so we came up with a project (that is actually Adèle’s big themed project for this internship): every time she has a peculiar story, like a zoom in in the heart of our city, she writes it down and then turns it into an animation.
She’s a Frenchie with a funny spirit and a curious eye, so she started to really fill in the blank pages of her Petit Book Animé du Bucharest. So here are the stories, coming one by one and you can see for yourselves how crappy or cool this city of ours is. Bisous!
Day per day
Rainy boots
I love rainy days, I usually put my yellow boots on and start jumping into the water. It was without knowing the Romanian pavements, obviously!
Pălincă like water
On a Saturday evening, I met 2 Spanish guys. Somehow, we bought a bottle of Pălincă, and one of them just couldn’t stop drinking (but without handling it like a Romanian too!)
Fleeting fanfară
I live next to the military fanfare and I’ve always wondered why they are playing music only when I am passing by.
Happy țambal
I was discovering the city, when I heard this beautiful music. I got closer, and saw this happy man playing țambal with a great smile and a very contagious joy.
Old Mici Lady
I am a routine girl. Every Saturday I love going to the Obor market, and there I get some Mici and Bere. This time, a very old lady is sitting in front of me, and says “Oh I loooooove mici” and starts gobbling them all.
The Transylvanian Cliché
Finally checked a typical tourist thing: visited Brașov and Bran and expected to meet the terrific Count Dracula. My advice: watch out every step, ’cause you cannot tell which friendly figure turns into a blood sucking cold hearted Dracula at night. Be(a)ware!
Hangover Ciorbă
Eating “ciorbă” is sort of a miracle-worker-magic-pill here in Romania, ‘cause everybody will offer it as a hangover cure. To be honest, that borsch really works wonders on the aching stomach and head of a little boozer.
Apă, Apă!
After you leave the big office buildings and get further into the real guts of Romania, you end up exchanging hellos and good-days and smiles with genuine generous people. The kind always ready to fill your bottle of water, and even more! You just need a car. And a tent.
Breakfast Bell
Woken up by the sound of a tinkling bell, while checked in at a tent? Do expect that if you pitched your tent where the sheep and cows have their breakfast, while the farmers and donkeys ride along with them.
Moldavian Guest
Being a guest in Moldova is definitively an experience you have to check once in your lifetime. You don’t only get an amount of food enormous, you also get the opportunity to try all the typical dishes and meet true and generous people.
The Cocalar
Be aware! The cocalar is not only an urban legend, you can find them everywhere, and especially in the very city center, trying to catch girls. Don’t worry, we have them in France too but we call them kéké!
Promenade in Văcărești
The legend says a fox is living in the beautiful Delta Văcărești, and I would totally understand it. This place is perfect to spend a time with yourself and the nature, and lucky me this wild oasis is 5min away from my work.
Mă Doare la Banană
I love romanian language and all those crazy-weird expressions. One of my favourite is “Ma doare la banana”. I just couldn’t understand how it would be possible (why don’t you care if your banana hurts??) until I got back to France and realize we have exactly the same saying!
